4 years ago yesterday I gave birth to my youngest and last child. I thought it would be fun to tell his birth story. Ever since Jordon and I got pregnant with our first child we felt that we would have a boy, girl, boy in that order. We had Ethan, then Ashley and completely expected to be told that our youngest was a boy when we had our ultrasound determining the sex of the baby. We were quit surprised when the doctor told us that we were expecting a girl. We already had a boy name picked out and no girl names at all. Jordon asked the doctor how sure he was that we were having a girl and the doctor said 98% because he had to leave a little margin for error. After we left we spent the rest of the pregnancy trying to decide on a girl name. Towards the end we had it narrowed down to 2. Jordon liked Kylie Ann and Ethan and I liked Addison. We had some friends who were expecting their first boy. I had saved all of Ethan's clothes because I expected to have another boy, but gave away all of Ashley's. We told them if we were having a girl we would swap our boy clothes for their girl clothes to help each other out. So we did.
Towards the end of the pregnancy we were living at my parents' house while we were trying to find a house to buy. Because of this move we changed doctors. My new doctor was going on vacation during the time that the baby was due so she gave us 2 options: be started early or wait and risk being delivered by a different doctor if it came before she got back. Of course I took the option of being started early. My parents had gone on vacation with my younger sister so it was just us at home. My other younger sister came with her daughter to stay during the birth and help out until my parents got back. The doctor set the date for us to go in to the hospital to be started. We were suppose to be at the hospital on June 3, a Sunday, at 5 pm. On the way to the hospital Jordon and I decided that the name would be Kylie Ann Hunter. I had the thought cross my mind "What if it's a boy?" but I quickly shoved it out of my head thinking "No it won't be. The doctor said it was a girl."
We got to the hospital and the nurse got me hooked up to all the machines. As she was hooking me up she was talking to me about who I was/belonged to (small town) and what we were expecting (girl). Come to find out, I went to school with her son. After she hooked me up she asked if I was feeling any contractions. I said no and she said that I was contracting so she was going to call the doctor to see if she wanted to just start me on pitocin or just wait and see what was going to happen. I don't remember a lot of what really took up the time. I filled out all our paperwork filling in Kylie Ann for the baby's name. I remember getting an epidural. My sister came up with her baby to keep us company. About 10 or 11 pm Jordon's mom and step dad showed up with Ethan and Ashley and talked to us for a little bit. They were going to stay the night at my parent's house. About midnight they were tired and I was still only about a 5 so I told Jordon to take them to my parents house and get them settled for the night because it would probably still be a while. About 10 minutes after he left to take them the nurse came in and checked me again. After checking she said okay, I'll go tell the doctor we're ready. I was pretty shocked. I tried calling Jordon's phone and he didn't answer so my sister called my parent's house and Jordon's mom said he had just left. We figured if he just left it would only take him 15 minutes before he was back. By then the doctor and nurses were back in there telling me to keep my legs closed and not to push if I felt an urge to push. I honestly didn't feel anything so that wasn't hard. Amy was waiting by the door of the hospital to watch for Jordon and hurry him in. He had gone to the gas station for a drink so he took extra time. As soon as he got there the doctor told me I could start pushing. The baby started sliding right out and the next I heard the doctor say was "Uh oh". Not the best thing to hear the doctor say. The cord was wrapped around the babies neck and she was struggling to get it off. She finally got it and I continued to push. Then I hear Jordon say "It's a boy." My first thought was "he's kidding because we had thought it would be a boy". Then the nurse said "It IS a boy." My thoughts: "Oh crap. We're screwed. We have no boy things!" After Sam was all weighed and cleaned up. He was handed to me. As Jordon called parents and grandparents to tell them Sam was born no one believed him at first. The doctor told me that this was the first baby she delivered that wasn't what the parents were told it was.
They moved us to a room and got us all situated. We finally got to go to sleep for the night. For the rest of our stay all the new nurses came in saying "Oh you're the ones that were told you were having a girl and got a boy!" We were famous. Sam was my easiest delivery and has so far been my easiest child. Thank goodness for that. He is such a sweety and can always make me smile with his cute smiling face. I love you so much Sam!
